Dogs sniffing out canine cancer

Understanding Canine Hemangiosarcoma

Canine hemangiosarcoma (HSA) is a type of cancer affecting the blood vessels in a dog's liver, spleen, and heart. It is challenging to detect in its early stages.

This condition has a short survival time of 3-6 months once diagnosed.

Unfortunately, there are no effective screening tests available. There is a critical need for improved diagnostic tools.

Early Detection Efforts

Early recognition of HSA can significantly improve treatment outcomes.

In this study, we are training dogs to distinguish between blood samples from dogs with confirmed hemangiosarcoma, healthy dogs, and dogs with other illnesses.

How to participate

  1. Check Eligibility: Do you have a dog who is four years or older and are willing to donate a blood sample?

  2. Talk to Your Vet: Ask your vet clinic to register in the study (you can share this web page). Please note, the only way to submit a sample is via a registered vet clinic.

  3. Set Up Appointment: Arrange a blood draw appointment at your registered clinic. If your dog is already scheduled for a blood draw for other reasons, inquire with your veterinarian if they can collect extra for this research.

  4. Sample Submission: Samples will be shipped by your veterinary clinic.
